Do the hotels and Airbnb wait for the same Guests?

We have recently witnessed the largest transaction in the history of tourism - because the merger of two large networks can certainly be described that way. What encouraged Marriott and Starwood to join forces?

Obviously, there is a usual argument about the need of consolidation during the times of crisis. Some say that the second reason is Airbnb - a direct accommodation service for the hosts and the potential guests, which was established in 2008. It is sometimes called the largest hotel company leaving such giants like InterContinental Hotels Group or Hilton Worldwide behind. Airbnb has been operating in over 190 countries and its resources contain over 2000 000 offers. The question is whether the hotels and a peer-to-peer service wait for the same customers? Airbnb will not be selected by the Guests looking for full service during their stay (for example reception and concierge services), accommodation during business trips, shorter time to analyse and choose the best offer, prestige, reliable booking system, predictable high level of services and developed auxiliary infrastructure.

The hotels can meet the above expectations and should emphasise it. Why do the users love Airbnb then? The most important reason is low price - it is responsible for popularity of that method of finding accommodation. Besides, because of travelling and learning new places and people, and also… fashion.

Obviously, there is a large part of the market which will be fought for by the hotels and Airbnb. However, the number of travellers increases every year. There will be a place for everyone on the market - it is confirmed by the summaries for 2015. Airbnb doubled the number of its Guests in comparison to the previous year. After a short slow-down, the hotels also caught a new wind and achieved record profits in 2015.
